Special Exhibition: Quilted Impressions 2

Reception
Visit the Arts Center from 5:30-7pm for a drop-in reception celebrating the Basset Gallery's newest exhibition, Quilted Impressions 2 featuring the work of renowned fiber artist Janet Swigler. Janet will speak at 6pm to put this incredible exhibition into context. Light refreshments will be served.
About the Exhibition
Works in Quilted Impressions 2 span a seven year period of creation. Some of the quilts are one-of-a-kind, while others are part of a series. All of them express what Janet Swigler loves: color and line. Quilt making, Swigler's art form, incorporates principles of art—quality of line, value, proportion, and figure/ground composition. Imaginative re-structuring of a simple shape or motif are important components. Swigler's art honors the tradition of quilt making and shows the versatility of a medium that uses only fabric and thread.
About the Artist
Janet Swigler's signature medium—quilting—combines a process of stitching and manipulating fabric with an intuitive and creative use of patterns. Swigler often works free-hand, and avoids using templates traditionally utilized in the process of quilt-making, preferring an intuitive process of discovery and creation. For Swilger, quilt making incorporates many of the principles of art: line quality, value, proportion, and figure/ground composition.
Swigler has worked in this style since 2013, often under the guidance of innovative quilt maker Nancy Crow of the Swithsonian Museum's Renwick Alliance.
